There are a few nice items in brown chests but by and large saving the key for something better is wise unless you're rolling in keys. I also would recommend just shooting brown chests to save the key (Unless you're playing pilot, then may as well try picking). Wiping on the early boss is also acceptable since it gives you more practice on them, which improves your future runs because if you kill a boss without taking any damage you get a master round which gives you +1 heart.
